Curiosities is an exhibition for the family intended especially for school-age children 6 years old and over.

The exhibition is a collaborative endeavour with Vicky Sabourin, artist. For the Manif d'art 8 event, the Family Gallery features works tailored to children by an artist who participates in the Biennial.

Vicky Sabourin’s artistic universe revolves around natural history, artefacts and curio cabinets. The Family Gallery houses an immersive exhibition consisting of showcases and cabinets, and introduces children to a diorama that enables them to be an active part of it and to play inside the installation. The nocturnal ambiance gives children the impression that they are visiting a forest at night and are entering the artist’s world that is not unlike the realm of Grimms’ fairy tales.

A TREE AND ITS MYSTERIES

A giant tree stands in the centre of the installation to recreate the mysterious universe of the boreal forest. At the foot of the tree perched on a base is a mound of earth covered with ceramic mushrooms, mice and natural elements, which Vicky Sabourin has specially created to round out this imposing area. A fox hides in the base as if in a burrow and forest sounds such as the wind, creaking and the noises of small animals emanate from the tree. Visitors can sit on logs and cushions around the tree to enjoy a selection of fascinating stories that take place in the woods.

CURIO CABINETS

As they might in a small natural history museum, children can observe items created and produced by the artist displayed in glass cases. The genuine curio cabinets contain mice, hares, a fox, golden droppings, birds’ eggs, mushrooms and other intriguing elements that spark the curiosity of young and old alike. Visitors can even crawl under the showcases to get a different perspective of what is displayed. To access the showcases, the children must follow the tracks of small animals on the ground, as if they were entering a burrow. Plush mice are scattered in the four corners of the Family Gallery to enhance the children’s pleasure of discovery. A drawing table installed specially for them allows children to take the time to draw small animals and characters from fabulous stories.

THE ART OF PERFORMING

Inspired by a nursery rhyme about strolling in the woods, by means of an imposing diorama the artist wanted to present a big reproduction of a forest landscape in which children can strike a pose. Wearing wolf, mouse, fox, hare and hooded costumes, children can perform and enliven this genuine tableau vivant. The numerous photos taken can be shared on the social networks to immortalize this happy time spent in the new MNBAQ exhibition (#galeriefamille).
